I have a comic in the Fall issue of NANO Fiction! Each issue, the flash fiction anthology asks an artist to feature their work and design the cover. I wanted to do something really different, and I really, really like how it turned out. At first I was given three pages to work with, and wondered how I could fill them, but by the time I had the storyboards drawn up, I had to ask for another. Who knew I had it in me?
The Fall issue will be the debut of The Sting and the Sweet. It’s about the duality of bees, and the fallout from a simultaneous birth of two rival queens.
The Sting and the Sweet is the first long form narrative comic I’ve drawn. I experimented with the panel layout and arranged them like the hexagon cells in a hive. There is no written dialog; the characters speak only in pictographs. I filled up several pages of my sketchbook with thumbnail drawings of potential plot lines, and ended up with more than I had room for! I decided to divide the longer story into several shorter chapters.
This is going to be just the first installment, and it’s only going to be in NANO Fiction. Check out a portion of the first page.
So… Want to know what happens next? I have a feeling the Fall issue of NANO Fiction will sell out fast! I’ve never been published in an anthology before, so this is a big deal for me! I will be printed alongside some very excellent writers. With no words in my comic, I feel underdressed for the occasion!

NANO Fiction Fifth Anniversary Dance Party and Art Auction:
If you’re in Houston on Friday August 26th, NANO Fiction will be previewing some of the art from The Sting and the Sweet at their Fifth Year Anniversary Dance Party and Art Auction. For the auction, I painted a big version of the cover in watercolor and India ink–two feet by three feet! You can check it out here. Come to the party, and you can get it for a steal!
